US Market Indexes Continue to Gain

Leading indexes reach new highs

All three of the U.S. market’s leading indexes reached new highs on Monday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,412.16 for a gain of 142.79 points or 0.70%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,328.25 for a gain of 12.15 points or 0.52%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,763.96 for a gain of 29.83 points or 0.52%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 11.07 for a gain of 0.22 points or 2.03%.

Monday’s market movers

No major economic reports were released on Monday. Stocks continued to gain from optimism over President Donald Trump’s new individual and corporate tax policies.

In the broad market, gains were led by financial stocks. Technology was also higher with the Standard & Poor's 500 technology sector gaining 0.45%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,392.38 for a gain of 3.53 points or 0.25%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 851.46 for a gain of 1.82 points or 0.21%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,272.33 for a gain of 11.76 points or 0.14%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,850.79 for a gain of 36.53 points or 0.37%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,725.67 for a gain of 4.83 points or 0.28%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,026.74 for a gain of 6.07 points or 0.59%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,385.27 for a gain of 6.69 points or 0.49%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,293.11 for a gain of 6.50 points or 0.51%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 649.79 for a gain of 3.05 points or 0.47%.
