U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20743.00 for a gain of 118.95 points or 0.58%. The S&P 500 closed at 2365.38 for a gain of 14.22 points or 0.60%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5865.95 for a gain of 27.37 points or 0.47%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 11.57 for a gain of 0.08 points or 0.70%.

Tuesday’s market movers

On Tuesday, the market’s leading economic report was the PMI Manufacturing Index. The Index decreased to 54.3, which was below consensus of 55.5 and a decrease from the prior report of 55.1.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Wal-Mart (WMT, Financial) 3%

UnitedHealth (UNH, Financial) 1.87%

Boeing (BA, Financial) 1.65%

Home Depot (HD, Financial) 1.41%

Chevron (CVX, Financial) 1.26%

Cisco (CSCO, Financial) 1.16%

Nike (NKE, Financial) 1.07%

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 0.86%

In the broad market, real estate led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector up 0.52%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1410.34 for a gain of 10.48 points or 0.75%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 862.21 for a gain of 7.11 points or 0.83%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8406.72 for a gain of 60.47 points or 0.72%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9950.83 for a gain of 88.24 points or 0.89%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1749.20 for a gain of 14.44 points or 0.83%; the S&P 100 Index at 1045.23 for a gain of 6.00 points or 0.58%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1406.78 for a gain of 8.74 points or 0.63%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1313.48 for a gain of 8.02 points or 0.61%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 654.51 for a gain of 4.09 points or 0.63%.
