U.S. market indexes were lower on Tuesday.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20,837.37 for a loss of 44.11 points or 0.21%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,365.45 for a loss of 8.02 points or 0.34%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,856.82 for a loss of 18.97 points or 0.32%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 12.23 for a gain of 0.88 points or 7.75%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Economic reports affecting market trading on Tuesday included the following:

  • The Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee began its two-day March policy meeting.
  • The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index decreased to 105.3 from 105.9.
  • The Producer Price Index increased 0.3% for the month and 2.2% for the year.
