The S&P 500 closed at 2439.07 for a gain of 9.01 points or 0.37%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6305.80 for a gain of 58.97 points or 0.94%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 9.66 for a loss of -0.23 points or -2.33%.
For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.56%, the S&P 500 gained 0.93% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.50%.
Friday’s market movers
Stocks gained as the jobs report changed the outlook for rate increases in 2017. The May jobs report was the main focus for the day with an increase of 138,000 jobs. The report was below consensus of 185,000 and below the prior month’s report of 174,000, signaling the Federal Reserve might be less aggressive with interest rate hikes for the remainder of the year.
