Cisco, Intel, Microsoft lead technology losses

U.S. market indexes were lower on Thursday.

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,287.03 for a loss of 167.58 points or 0.78%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,419.70 for a loss of 20.99 points or 0.86%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,144.35 for a loss of 90.06 points or 1.44%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 11.44 points for a gain of 1.41 points or 14.06%.

Thursday’s market movers

Technology stock losses affected market valuations on Thursday. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Cisco (CSCO, Financial), Intel (INTC, Financial) and Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) led losses.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis released GDP and corporate profits Thursday. The final estimate of GDP showed a seasonally adjusted 1.4% annual growth rate. Corporate profits reported another strong gain with an 11.5% increase from the first quarter of 2016.

In the broad market, technology stocks led losses. The S&P 500 technology sector reported a loss of 1.0%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,416.20 for a loss of 9.07 points or 0.64%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 855.45 for a loss of 5.09 points or 0.59%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,542.77 for a loss of 77.48 points or 0.90%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,553.62 for a loss of 35.28 points or 0.37%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,744.03 for a loss of 11.76 points or 0.67%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,066.68 for a loss of 9.06 points or 0.84%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,434.75 for a loss of 12.22 points or 0.84%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,341.36 for a loss of 11.66 points or 0.86%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 660.05 for a loss of 4.41 points or 0.66%.
