The S&P 500 closed at 2425.18 for a gain of 15.43 points or 0.64%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6153.08 for a gain of 63.61 points or 1.04%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 11.15 for a loss of -1.39 points or -11.08%.
For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.28%, the S&P 500 gained 0.06% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.18%.
Friday’s market movers
On Friday, the United States Department of Labor released its June employment report, which showed an increase of 222,000 jobs. The jobs report was above consensus of 170,000 and an increase from the prior month’s 152,000. The unemployment rate was slightly higher than expected at 4.4% versus consensus of 4.3% and a previous rate of 4.3%.
The better-than-expected jobs report helped stocks to gain on Friday. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Microsoft (MSFT, Financial) 1.30%
In the broad market, technology stocks led gains. The S&P 500 technology sector gained 1.10% for the day.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8557.11 for a gain of 97.47 points or 1.15%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9537.68 for a gain of 73.35 points or 0.78%.
