US Market Indexes Gain on Friday

Dow Jones closes at new high of 22,092.81

U.S. market indexes gained on Friday and the Dow Jones reached a new high. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,092.81 for a gain of 66.71 points or 0.30%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,476.83 for a gain of 4.67 points or 0.19%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,351.56 for a gain of 11.22 points or 0.18%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 9.98 for a loss of -0.46 points or -4.41%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 1.16%. The S&P 500 gained 0.17% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite reported a loss of -0.38%.

Friday’s Market Movers

A positive jobs report helped stocks to gain on Friday. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its July employment report showing an increase of 209,000 jobs for the month, above consensus of 178,000. The unemployment rate decreased to 4.3% from 4.4%.
  • International trade reported a deficit of -$43.6 billion.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Goldman Sachs (GS, Financial) 2.59%

Home Depot (HD, Financial) 1.30%

JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 1.25%

In the broad market, financial stocks led gains. Technology stocks were also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.24%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,412.32 for a gain of 7.09 points or 0.50%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 854.60 for a gain of 3.25 points or 0.38%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,558.59 for a gain of 30.21 points or 0.35%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,632.67 for a gain of 55.46 points or 0.58%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,751.48 for a gain of 4.28 points or 0.24%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,095.42 for a gain of 2.52 points or 0.23%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,464.47 for a gain of 3.38 points or 0.23%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,371.76 for a gain of 2.86 points or 0.21%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 664.57 for a gain of 1.33 points or 0.20%.
