The S&P 500 closed at 2,476.83 for a gain of 4.67 points or 0.19%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,351.56 for a gain of 11.22 points or 0.18%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 9.98 for a loss of -0.46 points or -4.41%.
For the week, the Dow Jones gained 1.16%. The S&P 500 gained 0.17% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite reported a loss of -0.38%.

A positive jobs report helped stocks to gain on Friday. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its July employment report showing an increase of 209,000 jobs for the month, above consensus of 178,000. The unemployment rate decreased to 4.3% from 4.4%.
- International trade reported a deficit of -$43.6 billion.
