U.S. market indexes were higher Tuesday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,370.80 for a gain of 39.45 points or 0.18%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,506.65 for a gain of 2.78 points or 0.11%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,461.32 for a gain of 6.68 points or 0.10%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 10.12 for a loss of 0.03 points or 0.30%.
Tuesday’s market movers
The Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all reported new highs on Tuesday. The Federal Open Market Committee also began its September monetary policy meeting, which ends on Wednesday and is expected to provide insight into the Fed’s balance sheet reduction.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- Housing starts decreased to 1.180 million SAAR from 1.190 million SAAR.
- The current account deficit dropped to $123.1 billion from $113.5 billion.
- Import prices reported a 0.6% monthly increase and a 2.1% yearly increase. Export prices were also higher with a 0.6% monthly increase and a 2.3% yearly increase.
In the Dow Jones Industrial Average the following stocks led gains:
- Verizon (VZ, Financial) 2.60%.
- American Express (AXP, Financial) 1.29%.
- Procter & Gamble (PG, Financial) 1.10%.
- JPMorgan (JPM, Financial) 1.10%.
In the broad market, financial and materials stocks led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.44%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,440.40 for a loss of 0.68 points or 0.05%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 865.98 for a loss of 1.17 points or 0.13%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,778.63 for a loss of 8.48 points or 0.10%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,678.33 for a loss of 3.90 points or 0.04%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,761.52 for a loss of 0.70 points or 0.04%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,109.26 for a gain of 3.00 points or 0.27%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,483.80 for a gain of 1.27 points or 0.09%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,389.11 for a gain of 1.34 points or 0.10%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 668.09 for a loss of 0.20 points or 0.03%.
