The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,591.51 for a loss of 12.04 points or 0.18%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 9.93 for a gain of 0.08 points or 0.81%.

U.S. indexes were lower as investors watched third-quarter bank earnings.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- Jobless claims decreased by 15,000 to 243,000.
- The Producer Price Index increased 0.4% for the month and 2.6% for the year.
- The EIA Petroleum Status report showed a decrease in oil inventory of 2.7 million barrels.
