U.S. market indexes were lower Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22,841.01 for a loss of 31.88 points or 0.14%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,550.93 for a loss of 4.31 points or 0.17%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,591.51 for a loss of 12.04 points or 0.18%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 9.93 for a gain of 0.08 points or 0.81%.

Thursday’s market movers

U.S. indexes were lower as investors watched third-quarter bank earnings.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Jobless claims decreased by 15,000 to 243,000.
  • The Producer Price Index increased 0.4% for the month and 2.6% for the year.
  • The EIA Petroleum Status report showed a decrease in oil inventory of 2.7 million barrels.

In the broad market, real estate led gains and financial stocks led losses. Technology was lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down 0.25%.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,114.58 for a loss of 7.87 points or 0.09%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,069.27 for a loss of 4.22 points or 0.04%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,819.73 for a loss of 0.01 points or 0.01%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,125.04 for a loss of 3.85 points or 0.34%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,514.00 for a loss of 2.30 points or 0.15%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,414.56 for a loss of 2.19 points or 0.15%, and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 681.20 for a gain of 1.62 points or 0.24%.
