U.S. market indexes were lower Monday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,348.74 for a loss of 85.45 points or 0.36%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,572.83 for a loss of 8.24 points or 0.32%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,698.96 for a loss of 2.30 points or 0.03%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 10.50 for a gain of 0.70 points or 7.14%.
Monday’s market movers
Stocks were lower Monday with a slightly different outlook for tax reform following a report that the House of Representatives was considering a phased-in decrease to corporate taxes rather than enacting new changes immediately.
Personal income and outlays was the only leading economic report for the day. Personal income increased 0.4% for the month. Year over year the PCE Price Index is up 1.6%.
In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:
- Merck (MRK, Financial) -6.06%.
- Verizon (VZ, Financial) -2.13%.
- General Electric (GE, Financial) -1.83%.
In the broad market, health care led losses and real estate led gains. Technology stocks were higher for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector up 0.22%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,490.90 for a loss of 17.42 points or 1.15%. The S&P 600 closed at 903.48 for a loss of 12.95 points or 1.41%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,057.39 for a loss of 72.78 points or 0.80%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,974.32 for a loss of 117.48 points or 1.16%.
