U.S. market indexes were higher on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,377.24 for a gain of 28.50 points or 0.12%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,575.26 for a gain of 2.43 points or 0.09%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,727.67 for a gain of 28.71 points or 0.43%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 10.17 for a loss of -0.33 points or -3.14%.
Stocks were higher in October. The Dow Jones gained 4.34%, the S&P 500 gained 2.20% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 3.56%.
Tuesday’s market movers
The Nasdaq Composite closed at a new high with help from Apple, which closed at $169.04 and gained 1.39% for the day.
The Federal Open Market Committee began its monetary policy meeting on Tuesday. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The Employment Cost Index increased 0.7% for the quarter and 2.5% for the year.
- The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index reported a seasonally adjusted increase of 0.5% and an annual increase of 5.9%.
- The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index increased to 125.9 from 120.6.

In the broad market, consumer staples and technology led gains. The S&P 500 consumer staples sector increased 0.87% and the S&P 500 technology sector increased 0.43%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,502.87 for a gain of 11.97 points or 0.80%. The S&P 600 closed at 912.04 for a gain of 8.56 points or 0.95%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,132.94 for a gain of 75.55 points or 0.83%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,032.28 for a gain of 57.96 points or 0.58%.
