U.S. market indexes were mostly lower on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 23,557.23 for a gain of 8.81 points or 0.04%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,590.64 for a loss of 0.49 points or 0.02%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,767.78 for a loss of 18.65 points or 0.27%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 9.89 for a gain of 0.49 points or 5.21%.

Tuesday’s market movers

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was the only leading Index to gain on Tuesday. It reached a new high of 23,557.23. Overall, bank and technology stocks were mostly lower due to uncertainty over tax reform.

Consumer credit was the only leading economic report for the day. Consumer credit increased $20.8 billion in September. The report was above consensus of $17.4 billion.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,479.09 for a loss of 18.87 points or 1.26%. The S&P 600 closed at 893.07 for a loss of 9.67 points or 1.07%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,030.20 for a loss of 113.09 points or 1.24%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,912.81 for a loss of 94.08 points or 0.94%.
