US Market Indexes Mostly Lower to Start the Week

Dow Jones reports a new closing high of 24,290.05

U.S. market indexes were lower on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,290.05 for a gain of 58.46 points or 0.24%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,639.44 for a loss of -2.78 points or -0.11%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,775.37 for a loss of -72.22 points or -1.05%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 11.77 with a gain of 0.34 points or 2.97%.

Monday’s market movers

Stocks were mostly lower Monday, but the Dow Jones closed with a new high. Lower tech stocks were the main factor for lower trading values.

Factory orders were the only leading economic report on the economic calendar Monday. Factory orders decreased -0.1% for the month.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,532.41 for a loss of -4.61 points or -0.30%. The S&P 600 closed at 9,38.01 for a gain of 0.70 points or 0.07%. The Dow Jones Large-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7,034.94 for a loss of -35.99 points or -0.51%. The Dow Jones Large-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 5,118.88 for a gain of 9.88 points or 0.19%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,894.07 for a loss of -0.51 points or -0.03%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,165.99 for a loss of -0.20 points or -0.02%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,563.70 for a loss of -2.18 points or -0.14%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,462.75 for a loss of -1.84 points or -0.13%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 705.28 for a gain of 3.85 points or 0.55%.
