US Market Indexes Gain on Friday

Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite close at new highs

U.S. market indexes were higher Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,803.19 for a gain of 228.46 points or 0.89%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2,786.24 for a gain of 18.68 points or 0.67%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,261.06 for a gain of 49.28 points or 0.68%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 10.16 for a gain of 0.28 points or 2.83%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 2.0%, the S&P 500 gained 1.56% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.72%.

Friday’s market movers

The leading large-cap indexes reported another day of new highs on Friday. Banks began reporting earnings this week. Investors also continued to have a positive outlook on tax reform affects.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Consumer Price Index increased 0.1% for the month and 2.1% for the year.
  • Retail sales increased 0.4% for the month.
  • Business inventories increased 0.4%.
  • The Baker Hughes rig count increased to 1,215 from 1,098.

In the broad market, consumer discretionary and energy led gains. Financial stocks were also higher with earnings reports from JPMorgan and Wells Fargo (WFC, Financial).

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,591.97 for a gain of 5.18 points or 0.33%. The S&P 600 Index closed at 969.17 for a gain of 3.56 points or 0.37%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,828.97 for a gain of 39.64 points or 0.40%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,481.93 for a gain of 14.41 points or 0.14%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,965.97 for a gain of 5.29 points or 0.27%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,234.55 for a gain of 8.73 points or 0.71%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,647.37 for a gain of 9.99 points or 0.61%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,542.77 for a gain of 9.71 points or 0.63%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 718.99 for a gain of 3.03 points or 0.42%.
