US Market Indexes Start the Week Higher

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,601.27 for a gain of 410.37 points or 1.70%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2,656.00 for a gain of 36.45 points or 1.39%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,981.96 for a gain of 107.47 points or 1.56%. The VIX Volatility Index closed at 26.24 for a loss of -2.82 points or -9.70%.

Monday’s market movers

The Trump administration released a $4.4 trillion budget for fiscal 2019, which included a long awaited immigration plan that included details on international border security. Simultaneously, the Treasury also released budget details on Monday. The Treasury budget was the only leading economic indicator on the calendar Monday. The Treasury reported a surplus of $49.2 billion.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Sectors leading stocks higher on Monday included the materials and technology sectors. The S&P 500 materials sector gained 2.01%. The S&P 500 technology sector gained 1.81%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,490.98 for a gain of 13.15 points or 0.89%. The S&P 600 closed at 911.28 for a gain of 8.48 points or 0.94%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,234.76 for a gain of 101.12 points or 1.11%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,751.18 for a gain of 72.83 points or 0.75%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,840.13 for a gain of 19.20 points or 1.05%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,176.38 for a gain of 17.18 points or 1.48%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,568.11 for a gain of 21.56 points or 1.39%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,469.08 for a gain of 19.40 points or 1.34%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 681.81 for a gain of 7.76 points or 1.15%.
