US Market Indexes Extend Gains on Thursday

U.S. market indexes were higher Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,200.37 for a gain of 306.88 points or 1.23%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2,731.20 for a gain of 32.57 points or 1.21%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,256.43 for a gain of 112.81 points or 1.58%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 19.17 for a loss of -0.09 points or -0.47%.

Thursday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes reported their fifth consecutive day of gains. The utilities and technology sectors led gains for the day.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Jobless claims increased by 7,000 to 230,000.
  • The Producer Price Index reported a monthly gain of 0.4% and a yearly gain of 2.7%.
  • Industrial production reported a monthly decrease of -0.1%.
  • The National Association of Home Builders’ Housing Market Index remained unchanged at 72.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,537.20 for a gain of 15.10 points or 0.99%. The S&P 600 Index closed at 937.91 for a gain of 8.62 points or 0.93%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,550.30 for a gain of 101.20 points or 1.07%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,989.26 for a gain of 75.85 points or 0.77%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,897.09 for a gain of 18.82 points or 1.00%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,208.44 for a gain of 15.20 points or 1.27%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,612.53 for a gain of 18.86 points or 1.18%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,511.82 for a gain of 17.91 points or 1.20%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 699.13 for a gain of 8.51 points or 1.23%.
