US Market Indexes Lower for the Week

U.S. market indexes were mixed on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,538.06 for a loss of -70.92 points or -0.29%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,691.25 for a gain of 13.58 points or 0.51%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,257.87 for a gain of 77.31 points or 1.08%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 19.66 for a loss of -2.81 points or -12.51%.

For the week, the Dow Jones reported a loss of -3.06%, the S&P 500 reported a loss of -2.04% and the Nasdaq Composite reported a loss of -1.12%.

Friday’s market movers

Reports on new international tariffs for steel and aluminum continued to cause market uncertainty Friday. Industrial stocks continued to report losses. Sectors leading gains for the day included health care, technology, consumer staples and energy.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 99.7.
  • The Baker Hughes rig count decreased to 1,283.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,533.17 for a gain of 25.78 points or 1.71%. The S&P 600 closed at 932.68 for a gain of 15.54 points or 1.69%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,548.44 for a gain of 161.69 points or 1.72%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,841.40 for a gain of 106.98 points or 1.10%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,878.61 for a gain of 20.52 points or 1.10%; the S&P 100 at 1,189.04 for a gain of 4.50 points or 0.38%; the Russell 3000 at 1,591.38 for a gain of 10.21 points or 0.65%; the Russell 1000 at 1,490.72 for a gain of 8.31 points or 0.56%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 683.96 for a gain of 3.37 points or 0.50%.
