US Market Indexes Gain on Friday, Lower for the Week

S&P 500 reports a loss of -1.28% for the week

U.S. market indexes were higher on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,946.51 for a gain of 72.85 points or 0.29%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,752.01 for a gain of 4.68 points or 0.17%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,481.99 for a gain of 0.25 points or 0.01%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 15.71 for a loss of -0.88 points or -5.30%.

For the week, the three leading U.S. market indexes reported losses. The Dow Jones was down -1.60% for the week. The S&P 500 reported a loss of -1.28% and the Nasdaq Composite reported a loss of -1.09%.

Friday’s market movers

Investors reported a slightly more positive outlook on Friday, helping stocks to gain. Sectors leading gains for the day included energy, utilities and industrials.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Housing starts reported a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.236 million.
  • Industrial production reported a monthly increase of 1.1%.
  • The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index increased to 102.0 from 99.7.
  • The Baker Hughes rig count decreased to 1,209 from 1,257.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,586.05 for a gain of 9.43 points or 0.60%. The S&P 600 closed at 969.45 for a gain of 8.24 points or 0.86%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,856.75 for a gain of 43.73 points or 0.45%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,107.12 for a gain of 85.92 points or 0.86%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,935.65 for a gain of 13.41 points or 0.70%; the S&P 100 at 1,211.40 for a gain of 0.63 points or 0.05%; the Russell 3000 at 1,629.68 for a gain of 3.78 points or 0.23%; the Russell 1000 at 1,525.34 for a gain of 3.08 points or 0.20%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 694.18 for a gain of 5.17 points or 0.75%.
