US Market Indexes Start the Week Higher

Dow Jones closes at 24,202.60 with a 2.84% gain

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,202.60 for a gain of 669.40 points or 2.84%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,658.55 for a gain of 70.29 points or 2.72%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,220.54 for a gain of 227.88 points or 3.26%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 21.16 for a loss of -3.71 points or -14.92%.

Monday's market movers

Investors eased some of their concerns over trade wars as stocks gained on Monday. Sectors leading gains included technology and financial.

The Chicago Fed National Activity Index was the only leading economic report on the calendar Monday. The Index increased to 0.88 from 0.02.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,543.72 for a gain of 33.63 points or 2.23%. The S&P 600 closed at 943.75 for a gain of 20.63 points or 2.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,615.38 for a gain of 214.11 points or 2.28%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,802.16 for a gain of 201.36 points or 2.10%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,879.46 for a gain of 39.99 points or 2.17%; the S&P 100 at 1,164.97 for a gain of 31.96 points or 2.82%; the Russell 3000 at 1,164.97 for a gain of 31.96 points or 2.82%; the Russell 1000 at 1,474.81 for a gain of 38.10 points or 2.65%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 675.45 for a gain of 12.56 points or 1.89%.
