We are pleased to announce we have made major improvements to our industry overview pages.
Background
The industry overview pages provide information on a wide variety of financial metrics, including the median price-earnings ratio, Shiller price-earnings ratio, return on equity and dividend yield. You can access the page through either the Screeners tab or the Market tab, as Figure 1 illustrates.

The Overview page includes a pie chart illustrating the sector weightings. Clicking on one of the sector slices will pull out that piece from the chart. Figure 2 shows a sample pie chart.

Page layout
As illustrated in Figure 3, the header section includes a gray ribbon and a series of subhead items. By clicking on a specific region, like the U.S., the U.K., Asia or India, you can view the sector and industry overview for that region. You can also click on a subhead item to go to that section of the page. Finally, we also included a “top” button in the bottom-right corner for convenience.
Figure 3
The overview page includes three sections: overview, comparison and historical ratio charts. The overview section includes the pie chart illustrated in Figure 2.
Figure 4 shows a sample comparison chart containing median price-earnings ratios for the 11 market sectors as defined by Morningstar Inc. (MORN, Financial). Click on one of the plus symbols to view the industries for that sector.

The historical comparison chart section allows you to compare the historical trend of several financial markets across specific regions. First, select the sector you wish to compare. You can then add the series for a region by clicking on that region’s name in the legend, located below each of the charts. Figure 5 shows a sample historical comparison chart section.

Choosing a specific sector or industry
You can directly search for an industry using the “Search industry” bar, as illustrated in Figure 6. For example, if you enter “retail,” the page will list “retail – apparel and specialty” and “retail – defensive.” The former includes companies like Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN, Financial), Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (BABA, Financial) and The Home Depot Inc. (HD, Financial), while the latter includes companies like Walmart Inc. (WMT, Financial), Costco Corp. (COST, Financial) and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. (WBA, Financial).
Figure 6
Each sector overview page contains the following sections: overview, industry comparison, sector performance, historical key ratio charts, insider trades and related economic indicators.
The sector performance page graphs the performance of an exchange-traded fund tracking that sector compared to the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY, Financial). For example, the iShares U.S. Consumer Goods ETF (IYK, Financial) tracks the performance of the consumer cyclical sector.
The insider trades section details the historical buy-sell ratio among insiders and CEOs for that sector. Likewise, the related economic indicators section includes key economic indicators pertaining to that sector.
The industry overview pages contain sections similar to those of the sector overview pages: overview, company comparison, historical key ratio charts and related economic indicators.
