US Market Indexes Close Mostly Higher on Tuesday

U.S. market indexes were mostly higher on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,099.05 for a loss of -64.10 points or -0.27%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,654.80 for a gain of 6.75 points or 0.25%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,130.70 for a gain of 64.44 points or 0.91%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 15.50 for a loss of -0.43 points or -2.70%.

Tuesday’s market movers

A rally in technology stocks helped U.S. market indexes to close mostly higher on Tuesday. In the S&P 500, technology led gains for the day with an increase of 1.25%.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Preliminary April motor vehicle sales are reported at an annualized rate of 17.2 million, just below the March rate.
  • The Federal Open Market Committee began its May meeting, which will end on Wednesday with no press conference or projections scheduled to be released.
  • The Purchasing Managers' Manufacturing Index increased to 56.5.
  • The Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Index decreased to 57.3.
  • Construction spending decreased -1.7% for the month and reported an annual increase of 3.6%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,550.31 for a gain of 8.43 points or 0.55%. The S&P 600 closed at 951.88 for a gain of 4.37 points or 0.46%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,580.95 for a gain of 51.38 points or 0.54%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,928.58 for a gain of 21.62 points or 0.22%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,879.56 for a gain of 7.11 points or 0.38%; the S&P 100 at 1,164.39 for a gain of 3.66 points or 0.32%; the Russell 3000 at 1,574.17 for a gain of 4.27 points or 0.27%; the Russell 1000 at 1,471.93 for a gain of 3.65 points or 0.25%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 686.28 for a loss of -3.05 points or -0.44%.
