John Buckingham Buys ETFs in 1st Quarter

AFAM Capital's CIO favors a variety of exchange-traded funds

John Buckingham (Trades, Portfolio), chief investment officer and chief portfolio manager of AFAM Capital, added 16 stocks to his portfolio in the first quarter, he disclosed this week.

Including the new buys, the portfolio lists 195 stocks, with 14% quarter-over-quarter turnover. In aggregate, they are valued at $909 million. ETF, options and preferred stocks occupy the most space at 32.8% of the portfolio, followed by technology at 14.4%.

In addition to portfolio management, Buckingham edits The Prudent Speculator, a highly ranked investment newsletter started in 1977 by the founder of AFAM Capital, Al Frank. Over the past 40 years, the newsletter’s portfolio has returned 17% an average annually.

Buckingham’s largest new buys of the first quarter were all exchange-traded funds: Vanguard Total International Bond ETF (BNDX, Financial), SPDR S&P China (GXC, Financial), iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF (SHY, Financial), VanEck Vectors J.P. Morgan EM Local Currency Bond (EMLC, Financial) and iShares 3-7 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEI, Financial).

Vanguard Total International Bond ETF (BNDX, Financial)

Buckingham purchased 198,770 shares of Vanguard Total International Bond ETF, giving it 1.2% portfolio weight. The stock’s first-quarter share price averaged $54.

Vanguard Total International Bond ETF has a market cap of $11.61 billion; its shares were traded around $54.56. The trailing 12-month dividend yield of Vanguard Total International Bond ETF stocks is 2.23%.

SPDR S&P China (GXC, Financial)

Buckingham purchased 77,045 shares of SPDR S&P China, giving it 0.94% portfolio weight. The stock’s first-quarter share price averaged $115.

SPDR S&P China has a market cap of $1.19 billion; its shares were traded around $111.06 with a P/E ratio of 14.24. The trailing 12-month dividend yield of SPDR S&P China stocks is 1.79%.

iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF (SHY, Financial)

Buckingham purchased 101,008 shares of iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF, giving it 0.93% portfolio weight. The stock’s first-quarter share price averaged $84.

VanEck Vectors J.P. Morgan EM Local Currency Bond (EMLC, Financial)

Buckingham purchased 296,100 shares of VanEck Vectors J.P. Morgan EM Local Currency Bond, giving it 0.64% portfolio weight. The stock’s first-quarter share price averaged $19.
