For the week, the Dow Jones gained 0.2%, the S&P 500 gained 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.1%. Year to date, the Dow Jones has gained 1.05%, the S&P 500 has gained 2.63% and the Nasdaq Composite has a return of 7.75%.
Friday’s market movers
A selloff in energy stocks led to broad market index losses on Friday as oil closed at new lows following discussions of increased production. Meanwhile, several sectors posted gains. The technology-focused Nasdaq Composite gained 0.13%. In the S&P 500, consumer sectors reported gains with some strong earnings reports from retail companies over the week. Real estate led gains in the S&P 500 on Friday with a sector return of 0.48%, followed by consumer discretionary with a gain of 0.21% and consumer staples with a gain of 0.14%.

- The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index decreased to 98.0.
- The Baker Hughes rig count showed an increase of 11 rigs across North America with a total rig count of 1,140.
