The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,049.64 on Monday with a gain of 259.29 points or 1.01%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,896.74 for a gain of 22.05 points or 0.77%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,017.90 for a gain of 71.92 points or 0.91%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 12.14 for a gain of 0.15 points or 1.25%.
Monday’s market movers
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed with new highs again on Monday as positive trade negotiations with Mexico helped stocks to gain. The U.S. and Mexico reached a trade agreement which President Trump called the United States-Mexico Trade Agreement. Trade negotiations with Canada begin in a few days and it is likely that a separate trade agreement may also be the result. The U.S.-Mexico agreement now requires 75% of automobiles to be manufactured in the NAFTA region, an increase from 62.5%.
In the broad market, the material, financial and industrial sectors led gains. Twitter (TWTR, Financial) was a leading contributor for the day, gaining 4.70% to $35.89.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The Chicago Fed National Activity Index decreased to 0.13 from 0.43.
- The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills, six-month bills and two-year notes at the following rates: three-month 2.080%, six-month 2.210%, two-year 2.655%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,728.41 for a gain of 2.73 points or 0.16%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,092.96 for a gain of 1.41 points or 0.13%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,792.33 for a gain of 50.02 points or 0.47%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,751.98 for a gain of 1.51 points or 0.01%.
