The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,986.92 on Thursday with a loss of -137.65 points or -0.53%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,901.13 for a loss of -12.91 points or -0.44%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,088.36 for a loss of -21.32 points or -0.26%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 13.53 for a gain of 1.28 points or 10.45%.
Thursday’s market movers
U.S. market indexes resisted a fifth day of new highs, retreating to close lower on Thursday. Reports on further plans to impose additional tariffs for China were a leading factor for the day’s losses. Investors were also watching North American trade discussions as Friday has been marked as the deadline for negotiations with Canada.
Reports on Thursday said that the Trump administration does plan to impose tariffs on another $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. Sectors leading losses for the day included utilities, health care, technology and energy. Despite the day’s losses, Amazon’s (AMN) stock was in the spotlight Thursday after increasing above $2,000 per share.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- Jobless claims increased by 3,000 to 213,000.
- The Personal Income and Outlays report was released. Personal income increased 0.3% for the month. The PCE Price Index showed a 2.3% annual increase.
- The Fed’s weekly balance sheet report showed a -$9.9 billion decrease in assets with total assets of $4.219 trillion.
- Mortgage rates were basically unchanged according to data from the Freddie Mac weekly market survey. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage weekly average increased one basis point to 4.52%. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage weekly average decreased by one basis point to 3.97%.
