Large-Cap Stocks Mostly Higher Monday, Nasdaq Closes With a Loss of -0.38%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,461.70 on Monday with a gain of 190.87 points or 0.76%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,738.31 for a gain of 15.25 points or 0.56%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,328.85 for a loss of -28.14 points or -0.38%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 19.96 for a gain of 0.45 points or 2.31%.

Monday’s market movers

Large-cap stocks traded mostly higher Monday with news from Apple (AAPL, Financial) and Amazon (AMZN, Financial) affecting the technology sector negatively. Investors were mostly upbeat ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections and the start of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy meeting Wednesday, in which no rate change is expected.

The Nasdaq Composite closed with a loss of -0.38% Monday and the S&P 500 technology sector was down -0.05%. Apple reported it would limit production on additional iPhone XRs and reports showed Amazon would be choosing two new headquarter locations instead of just one. Apple was down -2.84% and Amazon reported a loss of -2.27%.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Markit Composite PMI increased to 54.9 in October.
  • The Markit Services PMI increased to 54.8 in October.
  • The ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI decreased to 60.3 from 61.6 in October.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills, six-month bills and three-year notes at the following rates: three-month, 2.320%; six-month, 2.450%; three-year, 2.983%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1547.51 for a loss of -0.47 points or -0.03%. The S&P 600 closed at 974.74 for a gain of 1.31 points or 0.13%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9634.60 for a loss of -10.55 points or -0.11%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9725.46 for a gain of 66.27 points or 0.69%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,870.39 for a gain of 7.99 points or 0.43%; the S&P 100 at 1,217.50 for a gain of 6.76 points or 0.56%; the Russell 3000 at 1,615.69 for a gain of 7.23 points or 0.45%; the Russell 1000 at 1,514.04 for a gain of 7.34 points or 0.49%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,302.14 for a gain of 125.13 points or 0.44%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 696.02 for a gain of 7.71 points or 1.12%.
