US Market Indexes Continue Gains After Successful Cyber Monday

S&P 500 closes at 2,682.20 for a gain of 0.33%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 2,4748.73 on Tuesday with a gain of 108.49 points or 0.44%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,682.20 for a gain of 8.75 points or 0.33%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,082.70 for a gain of 0.85 points or 0.01%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 19.01 for a gain of 0.11 points or 0.58%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Stocks continued to gain Tuesday after one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year and a record-breaking Cyber Monday. Monday accounted for $7.9 billion in online sales, the highest ever and an increase of 20% from last year.

Tuesday’s trading did, however, include some headwinds. Oil prices were slightly lower and there were concerns over the U.S.’s plan on trade with China ahead of a Saturday negotiation meeting at the G20 Summit.

In single stock news:

  • The Trump Administration threatened to reduce subsidies to GM (NYSE:GM) after the company reported cost-reduction measures.
  • United Technologies (NYSE:UTX) reported it would divide into three parts.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index increased 5.1% in September.
  • The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index decreased to 135.7 in November from 137.9.
  • The Treasury held auctions for four-week bills at 2.27% and five-year notes at 2.880%.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,492.86 for a loss of 13.10 points or -0.87%. The S&P 600 closed at 938.45 for a loss of 7.95 points or -0.84%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,274.91 for a loss of 85.52 points or -0.91%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,550.38 for a loss of 64.69 points or -0.67%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,833.08 for a loss of 14.69 points or -0.80%; the S&P 100 at 1,186.55 for a gain of 6.09 points or 0.52%; the Russell 3000 at 1,579.88 for a gain of 2.04 points or 0.13%; the Russell 1000 at 1,482.06 for a gain of 3.08 points or 0.21%; the Wilshire 5000 at 27,644.93 for a gain of 26.13 points or 0.09%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 687.07 for a gain of 3.34 points or 0.49%.
