US Market Indexes Close Higher on Monday

Nasdaq Composite closes at 7,441.51 with a gain of 1.51%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,826.43 on Monday with a gain of 287.97 points or 1.13%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,790.37 with a gain of 30.20 points or 1.09%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,441.51 with a gain of 110.97 points or 1.51%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 16.44 for a loss of 1.63 points or -9.02%.

Monday’s market movers

Stocks started the week higher Monday. Investors had a more positive outlook on trade with China after the US and China agreed to a truce Saturday that would forego anymore immediate tariffs. In the S&P 500, energy, technology and consumer discretionary led gains.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Markit Manufacturing PMI decreased to 55.3 in November from 55.7.
  • The ISM Manufacturing PMI increased to 59.3 in November from 57.7.
  • Construction spending decreased 0.1%.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 2.365% and six-month bills at a rate of 2.495%.
  • Preliminary total vehicle sales for November were reported at 17.49 million, a decrease from 17.57 million.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,548.96 for a gain of 15.69 points or 1.02%. The S&P 600 closed at 969.77 for a gain of 6.82 points or 0.71%. The Dow Jones Large-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7,793.33 for a gain of 115.12 points or 1.50%. The Dow Jones Large-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 5,184.53 for a gain of 32.86 points or 0.64%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,895.32 for a gain of 16.67 points or 0.89%; the S&P 100 at 1,238.63 for a gain of 13.44 points or 1.10%; the Russell 3000 at 1,643.90 for a gain of 17.91 points or 1.10%; the Russell 1000 at 1,542.45 for a gain of 16.89 points or 1.11%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,768.57 for a gain of 319.70 points or 1.12%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 703.40 for a gain of 6.17 points or 0.88%.
