US Market Indexes Close Lower Tuesday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,404.48 on Tuesday with a loss of 301.87 points or -1.22%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,632.90 for a loss of 37.81 points or -1.42%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,020.36 for a loss of 136.87 points or -1.91%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 20.58 for a gain of 2.78 points or 15.62%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes were lower Tuesday, affected by a global selloff that followed a decreased economic growth outlook by the International Monetary Fund. Treasury yields were also lower with the 10-year Treasury falling 5.4 basis points to 2.728%. The U.S. Dollar Index was up slightly higher, however, as the IMF’s outlook for the U.S. was unchanged.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The seasonally adjusted annual rate for existing home sales decreased 6.4% in December to 4.99 million.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills and six-month bills at rates of 2.390% and 2.450%.
  • The IMF decreased the global growth outlook to 3.5% for 2019.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,457.45 for a loss of 25.05 points or -1.69%. The S&P 600 closed at 908.96 for a loss of 15.32 points or -1.66%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,122.97 for a loss of 164.26 points or -1.77%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,279.12 for a loss of 110.81 points or -1.18%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,789.42 for a loss of 27.83 points or -1.53%; the S&P 100 at 1,163.81 for a loss of 17.74 points or -1.50%; the Russell 3000 at 1,552.67 for a loss of 22.69 points or -1.44%; the Russell 1000 at 1,457.25 for a loss of 21.00 points or -1.42%; the Wilshire 5000 at 27,214.48 for a loss of 402.80 points or -1.46%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 664.79 for a loss of 6.96 points or -1.04%.
