US Market Indexes Report a Third Day of Closing Gains on Friday

S&P 500 up 0.85% with short-term shutdown resolution plan

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,737.20 on Friday with a gain of 183.96 points or 0.75%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,664.76 for a gain of 22.43 points or 0.85%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,164.86 for a gain of 91.40 points or 1.29%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 17.43 for a loss of 1.46 points or -7.73%.

For the week, the S&P 500 gained 0.2%, the Dow Jones gained 0.1% and the Nasdaq gained 0.1%.

For the year, the Nasdaq has gained 8.0%, the S&P 500 is up 6.3% and the Dow Jones has a return of 6.0%.

Friday's market movers

A short-term resolution to the government shutdown helped stocks to close with gains for a third day. The Trump administration announced a deal that would reopen the government for three weeks while officials continue to negotiate on border wall funding. The president is expected to sign the deal on Friday, the 35th day of the government shutdown.

Earnings growth was also a positive factor Friday as investors were upbeat given the week's reports. Lear Corp. (LEA, Financial) and Hill-Rom Holdings Inc. (HRC, Financial) were top earnings gainers for the day with returns of 6.69% and 4.88% respectively.

The Baker Hughes North American oil rig count was the only major report on the economic calendar Friday. The rig count increased to 1,291 from 1,259.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,482.85 for a gain of 18.45 points or 1.26%. The S&P 600 closed at 922.98 for a gain of 10.30 points or 1.13%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,304.88 for a gain of 126.43 points or 1.38%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,397.68 for a gain of 94.95 points or 1.02%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,818.57 for a gain of 19.34 points or 1.07%; the S&P 100 at 1,176.11 for a gain of 8.68 points or 0.74%; the Russell 3000 at 1,573.31 for a gain of 14.43 points or 0.93%; the Russell 1000 at 1,476.14 for a gain of 13.16 points or 0.90%; the Wilshire 5000 at 27,572.61 for a gain of 248.79 points or 0.91%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 669.10 for a gain of 1.78 points or 0.27%.
