US Market Indexes Close Higher Tuesday With Agreement to Prevent Shutdown

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,425.76 on Tuesday with a gain of 372.65 points or 1.49%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,744.73 for a gain of 34.93 points or 1.29%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,414.62 for a gain of 106.71 points or 1.46%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 15.44 for a loss of 0.53 points or -3.32%.

Tuesday’s market movers

Stocks ended higher Tuesday with an agreement in Congress to prevent a government shutdown, which was scheduled for Friday night. The deal agreed on by Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate includes $1.38 billion for border wall funding along with details for six bills central to other areas of government funding.

Sectors leading stock gains for the day included materials, consumer discretionary and industrials. On the earnings calendar, Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL, Financial) led gains with a $1.25 earnings beat and a return of 13.41%.

Treasury prices across the yield curve were mostly lower except in the six-month and one-year range, where yields fell to 2.508% and 2.566%. The U.S. dollar was also mostly lower with losses against the euro, pound, yuan, Canadian dollar and the Mexican peso.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Business Optimism Index decreased to 101.2 in January from 104.4.
  • Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell delivered a speech headlining support for the Community Reinvestment Act while also noting that data at the national level is showing a strong economy.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,535.42 for a gain of 16.44 points or 1.08%. The S&P 600 closed at 954.58 for a gain of 11.33 points or 1.20%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,697.79 for a gain of 132.63 points or 1.39%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,678.13 for a gain of 69.52 points or 0.72%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,883.03 for a gain of 18.39 points or 0.99%; the S&P 100 at 1,204.96 for a gain of 15.37 points or 1.29%; the Russell 3000 at 1,623.20 for a gain of 19.49 points or 1.22%; the Russell 1000 at 1,522.50 for a gain of 18.42 points or 1.22%; the Wilshire 5000 at 28,461.51 for a gain of 357.59 points or 1.27%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 689.09 for a gain of 6.06 points or 0.89%.
