2009 Performance

Pabrai manages his portfolios under three hedge different funds catered for investors under different needs. But the underlining strategies are the same. During 2009, the funds rebounded dramatically, yielding between 118 to 125%.

A Buffett Admirer

Pabrai is a big admirer of Warren Buffett. He conducts his business in the same fashion as Warren Buffett conducted his Buffett Associates partnership. He invests most of his personal money into his hedge funds, aligning his interest along with that of his clients. And he charges his clients a quarter of the gains beyond 6% annual return, just as Buffett did when he first started.

He considers he learned everything about investing from Warren Buffett, so in order to pay back, he bid $650,000 to have a lunch with Buffett in June of 2008.

Fine Tuning A Concentrated Portfolio

Yet one more aspect Pabrai learnt from Buffett is to concentrate one’s bet, but apparently he has been learning from the past experience and fine-tuning the strategy.

Early in the last decade, he typically concentrate 80% on top 10 so stocks at any given time ( so called “10x10”). After many missteps in 2008, he adjusted the strategy to something called “2-5-10”: typically making bet at 5% of assets; sometimes making 2% bets; and once in a while, venturing as high as 10% on a stock.

Pabrai thinks the more diversified portfolio is the right balance.

Another thing he is doing differently is to run a written checklist on the stock ideas. Inspired by Dr. Atul Gawande, author ofThe Checklist Manifestoir?t=wwwkidspensco-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0805091742, Pabrai developed a checklist of 70+ questions. He expects the checklist will reduce the error-rate dramatically.
