U.S. and Chinese stocks gained Monday after President Trump canceled the March 1 China tariffs deadline. Reports show negotiations are progressing successfully and moving toward a final agreement. China's Shanghai Composite gained 157.06 points or 5.60% to 2961.28 and the S&P 500 reported a gain of 0.12%.
Treasury yields were mostly higher with the 30-year Treasury yield increasing to 3.032%. The U.S. Dollar Index decreased 0.05% to 96.43 and the dollar weakened against the yuan to an exchange rate of 6.6894.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The Chicago Fed National Activity Index decreased to -0.43 in January from 0.05.
- Wholesale inventories increased 1.1% in December.
- The Treasury held auctions for two-year notes at a rate of 2.503%, six-month bills at a rate of 2.455%, three-month bills at a rate of 2.405% and five-year notes at a rate of 2.489%.
