Stocks Gain With Canceled Tariff Deadline

S&P 500 gains 0.12%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,091.95 on Monday with a gain of 60.14 points or 0.23%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,796.11 for a gain of 3.44 points or 0.12%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,554.46 for a gain of 26.92 points or 0.36%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 14.89 for a gain of 1.38 points or 10.21%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. and Chinese stocks gained Monday after President Trump canceled the March 1 China tariffs deadline. Reports show negotiations are progressing successfully and moving toward a final agreement. China's Shanghai Composite gained 157.06 points or 5.60% to 2961.28 and the S&P 500 reported a gain of 0.12%.

Treasury yields were mostly higher with the 30-year Treasury yield increasing to 3.032%. The U.S. Dollar Index decreased 0.05% to 96.43 and the dollar weakened against the yuan to an exchange rate of 6.6894.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Chicago Fed National Activity Index decreased to -0.43 in January from 0.05.
  • Wholesale inventories increased 1.1% in December.
  • The Treasury held auctions for two-year notes at a rate of 2.503%, six-month bills at a rate of 2.455%, three-month bills at a rate of 2.405% and five-year notes at a rate of 2.489%.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,588.81 for a loss of 1.26 points or -0.08%. The S&P 600 closed at 984.53 for a loss of 2.76 points or -0.28%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 10,021.51 for a gain of 4.85 points or 0.05%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,850.19 for a loss of 40.67 points or -0.41%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,933.12 for a loss of 0.60 points or -0.03 %; the S&P 100 at 1,228.38 for a gain of 3.32 points or 0.27%; the Russell 3000 at 1,656.44 for a gain of 1.91 points or 0.12%; the Russell 1000 at 1,552.00 for a gain of 2.02 points or 0.13%; the Wilshire 5000 at 29,021.31 for a gain of 35.02 points or 0.12%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 700.72 for a loss of 1.88 points or -0.27%.
