U.S. market indexes closed lower Tuesday after new threats of European tariffs made headlines. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has reported plans to tax $11 billion in European goods, including helicopters, bicycles, cheese and wine. The trade plans are counter to European subsidies for Airbus (XPAR:AIR).
In currencies, the U.S. Dollar Index was lower at 97.02, falling 0.05%. The dollar gained 0.02% against the pound and 0.08% to the euro. The dollar was down 0.07% to the yuan.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The NFIB Business Optimism Index increased to 101.8 in March from 101.7.
- The Treasury held an auction for three-year notes at a rate of 2.301%.
