Stocks continued to gain Tuesday after the U.S.’s reported trade truce with China. The S&P 500 reached a new closing high at 2,973.01.
A report on trade with the European Union capped gains for the day and created some new uncertainty in international trade relations. The U.S. released a list of European Union goods on Tuesday worth $4 billion that could see U.S. import taxes. No import tariffs have been imposed specifically on the European Union yet, though Tuesday’s announcement adds to a proposed tariff list.
June vehicle sales was the only major report on the economic calendar Tuesday with preliminary results being provided throughout the day. Analysts are estimating a seasonally adjusted annual average of 17 million, decreasing from the previous total of 17.3 million.
