US Large Cap Indexes Close Higher to Start the Week on Monday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 27,171.90 Monday with a gain of 17.70 points or 0.07%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,985.03 for a gain of 8.42 points or 0.28%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,204.14 for a gain of 57.65 points or 0.71%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 13.58 for a loss of 0.87 points or 6.02%.

Monday’s market movers

U.S. large cap indexes closed higher as investors were optimistic ahead of the biggest second-quarter earnings week on the calendar. Over 25% of S&P 500 companies will report earnings this week. On Friday, investors will also receive the GDP report and the PCE Price Index report, two important metrics for the Fed’s consideration at its next meeting on July 30 and 31.

In the S&P 500, technology stocks led gains with investors hopeful about earnings from Amazon (AMZN, Financial), Alphabet (GOOGL, Financial)(GOOG, Financial) and Facebook (FB, Financial) this week. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Chicago Fed National Activity Index increased to -0.02 in June from -0.03.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 2.040% and six-month bills at a rate of 2.010%.

Small-cap stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,544.78 for a loss of 3.11 points or 0.20%. The S&P 600 closed at 938.25 for a loss of 2.19 points or 0.23%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,003.12 for a loss of 3.23 points or 0.03%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,430.09 for a loss of 48.41 points or 0.51%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,935.64 for a loss of 1.76 points or-0.091%; the S&P 100 at 1,320.12 for a gain of 4.70 points or 0.36%; the Nasdaq 100 at 7,905.12 for a gain of 70.22 points or 0.90%; the Russell 3000 at 1,753.66 for a gain of 4.16 points or 0.24%; the Russell 1000 at 1,653.64 for a gain of 4.44 points or 0.27%; the Wilshire 5000 at 30,687.66 for a gain of 80.09 points or 0.26%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 714.52 for a loss of 2.49 points or 0.35%.
