U.S. stock investors showed greater uncertainty over the European Central Bank and Federal Reserve’s next moves on economic stimulus in September. The ECB will meet on Thursday and Federal Reserve officials entered a quiet period on Sept. 7 leading up to their Sept. 17 meeting.
Tech stocks also continued losses as states take steps to probe both Facebook (FB, Financial) and Google (GOOG, Financial)(GOOGL, Financial), adding additional pressure from the ongoing federal investigations. The Nasdaq 100 was down 0.23% and the FAANGs reported the following:

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index decreased to 103.1 in August from 104.7.
- The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey showed job openings in July at 7.217 million.
- The Treasury held auctions for 52-week bills at a rate of 1.740% and three-year notes at a rate of 1.573%. .
In the S&P 500, real estate, consumer staples and technology led losses, while energy and materials led gains. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:
