Advance Auto Parts Inc Frequently Asked Questions
Guru Commentaries on NYSE:AAP
Advance Auto Parts is a store-based retailer of aftermarket automotive parts and supplies. The company has historically earned decent (approaching 20%) returns on tangible capital. It is currently attempting a turnaround, having fixed its balance sheet and is improving operations. The stock trades at an attractive upside-to-downside ratio, indicating potential for significant gains as the turnaround progresses.
We added to Advance Auto Parts as its price became more attractive, despite the company’s progress in turning around the business. The 'ugly ducking' stocks that we own are undervalued and have enormous potential. Stock prices may drop further, and I cannot predict when our ugly ducklings will rebound toward fair value, but we remain focused on buying good businesses at attractive prices knowing that we will reap the rewards over time.
In 2020, during the COVID-related selloff, I expected ORLY and its peers (AutoZone and Advance Auto) to gain share from mom-and-pop competitors. Not only did ORLY outperform, but Advance Auto has struggled, and even AutoZone has lagged behind O’Reilly’s growth. This indicates that Advance Auto is facing challenges in maintaining its market position and growth relative to its competitors.
