Shots being developed for two common viruses move farther down the pipeline

At its April 14 Vaccines Day, Moderna Inc. (MRNA) provided evidence that the company has plenty in the tank behind its highly successful Covid-19 shot. The challenge now is to get the products across the finish line.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotech has a boatload of cash for research and development, having reaped the benefits of supplying a high percentage of the nearly 193 billion Covid doses that have been given in the U.S. to date. Pfizer Inc. (PFE), BioNTech SE (BNTX) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) also have approved shots, but the latter's been put on hold over safety concerns.

Bristol-Myers had the biggest increase year over year, AbbVie the smallest

A common saying among investors is that you have to spend money to make money. If that's the case, the top R&D spenders in the pharmaceutical industry should have a high potential to be among the leading cash generators in the industry going forward, which would be good news for investors in the companies.

Heading the 2020 rankings once again is Roche (RHHBY). The Swiss company poured nearly $14 billion to discover and develop new products last year. That's more than a 9% increase from 2019 and represents more than 22% of the company's revenue, according to FierceBiotech.

Covid-19 held down revenues nearly across the board

Johnson & Johnson's (JNJ) 2020 revenue topped all pharmaceutical companies, according to rankings published by Fierce Pharma.

The New Brunswick, New Jersey-based health care giant raked in $82.6 billion last year, just squeezing past its total for the previous year as the pandemic took its toll on sales. Johnson & Johnson avoided a drop in revenue thanks to its pharma business, which scored an 8% gain over the previous year to $45.6 billion.

The company's consumer business eeked out a small increase, but the medical device unit wasn't as lucky. Sales dropped nearly 12%, as people put off medical procedures.

Their financials are in good condition

If you want to have a higher likelihood to find companies in a good shape from a financial standpoint, you may want to consider the following three stocks, as their trailing 12-month (TTM) Ebitda margins are beating S&P 500's 11.35% as of the writing of this article.

The Ebitda margin, which is calculated as earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization divided by total revenue, is a good indicator of a company's financial health as it excludes the effect of unique decisions and tax laws from the evaluation of a company's performance. These decisions are in regards to the recognition

Money came from venture capital, investors and Big Pharma

Cell and gene therapy companies are quickly emerging as favorites of venture capital firms, investors and members of Big Pharma, according to a report from the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine.

The numbers are eye-catching. In 2020, biotechs working in this space garnered nearly $20 billion in funding. That's 50% higher than the previous record of $13.5 billion in 2018 and a remarkable achievement coming in the face of Covid-19.

More than $5.5 billion of last year's investments flowed from venture capital financing for startups, the biggest being the $700 million raised by cell therapy developer Sana Biotechnology Inc.(SANA). That was

Courier company issues robust guidance

Bolstered by strong holiday shipping, FedEx Corp. (FDX) reported better-than-expected third-quarter 2021 results after the closing bell on Thursday.

The Memphis, Tennessee-based logistics company posted adjusted earnings of $3.47 per share for the three months ended Feb. 28, topping Refinitiv's estimates of $3.23. While net income of $939 million was up substantially from $371 million a year ago, FedEx's operating income took a $350 million hit as a result of severe winter weather in February impacting operations at several of its major hubs.

Revenue grew 23% from the prior-year quarter to $21.51 billion on the back of robust volume growth

The company looks financially strong regardless of which angle it is analyzed from

Introduction

Genmab AS (GMAB) (OCSE:GMAB) is a Danish biotechnology company founded in Copenhagen in 1999. The company is a leader in the development of antibody therapeutics aimed at curing cancer and other diseases.

I became interested in Genmab mainly because of its outstanding financial metrics. The company has a strong balance sheet, outstanding profitability and almost no debt. Of course, as any other biotechnology company, it does have risks, which are mainly related to the future acceptance of the therapeutics currently present in its pipeline.

Let's first have a look at how the company is generating its profits today, before

The S&P 500 surpassed 3,700 for the first time in history during this period, the Nasdaq rocketed above 12,800 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average surpassed its pre-Covid highs.

The U.S. stock market continues to be valued far higher than what the country's collective businesses are currently worth. The Buffett Indicator, which is the ratio of total market cap to gross domestic product, stands at 187.2% as of March 5, indicating

Stock prices rose again last month in part based on passage optimism of a government stimulus package

Stock prices rose again last month in part based on passage optimism of a government stimulus package (currently proposed at $1.9 trillion). But the rise happened before stock prices took a breather during the last couple of weeks, especially in hot growth sectors like the technology-heavy QQQ exchange traded fund, which fell modestly by -0.1% in February. As some blistering areas cooled off, investors decided to shift more dollars into the value segment of the stock market (e.g., the Russell 1000 Value index soared +6% last month). Over the same period, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial
