GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Jerome Dodson Comments on Progressive - Apr 26, 2017

Auto insurer Progressive (NYSE:PGR) added 41 basis points to the Fund’s return, as its shares rose 10.4% from $35.50 to $39.18. Progressive’s stock climbed higher as its underwriting profits rose, in sharp contrast to many peers who are struggling with the increase in distracted driving. Progressive’s Snapshot, a device that users plug into their cars to monitor their driving, provides the company with the most precise and real-time data in the industry. This data allows Progressive to identify safe drivers and reward them with lower prices than other insurers can offer, while avoiding unsafe drivers who are unprofitable.

Buy What You Know, Study What You Don't The best way to form a 'correct yet contrarian view' of a stock is to pick a stock to research where you already have some background knowledge on the company, its products or the industry
The concept of “buy what you know” is a Peter Lynch idea. Most investors I talk to think it’s too simplistic. Like any idea, perhaps it is too simplistic if taken to the extreme. But I’ve found talking to other investors that they underestimate how much of an advantage you have in starting your research process on the firm footing of knowing something about the business you are about to research and how it works in the real world. DCFs and Probabilities: How to Apply Them in Practice – Not Theory Discounted cash flow calculations and probabilities are theoretical tools that rarely have direct application in a value investor's life. They are best used to simplify and rule out certain decisions
Value investors know that – as Buffett has said – the theoretically correct way to value a company is to project cash flows from now till Judgment Day and then discount those cash flows back to the present at an appropriate rate. They also know – more from hearing Munger talk than hearing Buffett talk – that the theoretically correct way to invest in stocks is by using probabilities. Applying the ideas of “Pascal and Fermat” as Munger would say. Theoretically, playing the probabilities is the right way to make bets. And, theoretically, the value of Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) really is the sum of the company’s future cash flows discounted back to the present at an appropriate rate. Read more...
