GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Universal Forest Products Inc and its subsidiaries supply wood and wood-alternative products to three primary markets namely retail, industrial and construction.

Universal Forest Products Inc is a Michigan corporation incorporated in 1955. It is a holding company that designs, manufactures and markets wood and wood-alternative products for national home centers and other retailers, structural lumber and other products for the manufactured housing industry, engineered wood components for residential and commercial construction, and specialty wood packaging, components and packing materials for various industries. The Company's consumer products subsidiary offers a large portfolio of outdoor living products, including wood composite decking, decorative balusters, post caps and plastic lattice, and its garden group offers products, such as trellises and arches, to retailers nationwide. Its subsidiaries also provide framing services for the site-built market and forming products for concrete construction. Its operating segments consist of the North, South, West, Alternative Materials, International, and Corporate divisions. The customers comprising the retail market are national home center retailers, retail-oriented regional lumberyards and contractor-oriented lumberyards. The products offered to customers in this market include dimensional lumber (both preserved and unpreserved) and various 'value-added products,' some of which are sold under its trademarks. In addition to its conventional lumber products, it offers composite wood and plastic products. It also provides framing services for customers in certain regional markets, in which it erect the wood structure. The Company is one of the domestic buyers of solid sawn softwood lumber from primary producers (lumber mills). It uses mainly Southern Yellow Pine in its pressure-treating operations and site-built component plants in the Southeastern United States, which it obtains from mills located throughout the states comprising the Sunbelt. The Company faces competition on individual products from several different producers, but the majority of these competitors tends to be regional in their efforts and do not offer a full line of outdoor lumber products.

Housing Market at New Levels Housing market likely to remain stable
With a rate increase from the Federal Reserve likely in September or December, many investors will be closely watching the housing market where the Fed’s easing policy over the past few years has had the greatest affects. The market’s leading source for average mortgage rate data, Freddie Mac, has shown mortgage rates holding steady and even falling slightly in recent weeks. The Aug. 18 report showed the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage at 3.43%, down from 3.45% in the previous week. The average 15-year fixed-rate mortgage was also down slightly from the previous week at 2.74%. Mortgage applications and refinancings however have begun to slow with the most recent report from the Mortgage Bankers Association, showing mortgage applications down 2.1% and refinancings down 3%.
