GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Guru Investment Theses on WPP PLC

Tweedy Browne Comments on WPP - May 14, 2018

WPP (NYSE:WPP), one of our newer holdings, was in the news late in the quarter as the company announced that it had hired a law firm to investigate allegations of personal misconduct by Martin Sorrell, the company’s CEO and one of Britain’s best known and highly acclaimed business leaders. The company stressed that any financial liabilities associated with the allegations are not material, and over the weekend of April 14, Sorrell announced his retirement. We continue to monitor the situation closely, but it is possible that this Board intrigue could result in changes at the company that might be beneficial to shareholders, such as streamlining the business and exiting noncore assets. The situation remains fluid. In our view, the company remains fundamentally a good business given its asset light nature and variable cost structure. It is significantly undervalued in our view, and currently has a dividend yield of nearly 5% while we wait for value recognition in its shares.

David Herro and Bill Nygren Comment on WPP - Apr 06, 2018

WPP (NYSE:WPP), a leading global advertising company, was the largest detractor for the quarter. Investors reacted negatively to the company’s fiscal 2017 results, reported in March. Account losses from 2016 had an abnormally high negative effect on growth in 2017. The company also announced weaker guidance for 2018. However, management indicated this is primarily due to the poor performance of legacy businesses rather than problems in the company’s digital or media divisions. Many developed-market multinational companies are cutting their advertising spending to control costs, which has in turn put pressure on global advertising agencies. WPP has admitted they were slow to recognize this trend and subsequently contain costs, but management will be more diligent to such changes going forward. WPP’s media and digital businesses are performing well and have good growth prospects, although the company is facing some short-term pressure. Despite the challenging short-term situation, our investment thesis for WPP is intact, and we used its recent share price weakness to increase our position.

David Herro Comments on WPP - Oct 09, 2017

WPP (NYSE:WPP), a leading global advertising agency, was the largest detractor from performance for the fiscal year and most recent quarter. WPP’s fiscal first-half earnings fell short of market forecasts. The shortfall was driven by lower than projected like-for-like sales across segments. Profits before tax and earnings per share were also less than investors expected. Some of the factors that hurt WPP’s performance were account losses during the Mediapalooza event, exposure to developed market multinationals that have reduced advertising spending and digital revenues that are growing slower than those at Internet giants in the U.S. and China. Although management is expecting business to gradually improve in the second half of the year, the company lowered its full-year net sales organic growth guidance to a range of zero to +1% from the prior +2% growth prediction. However, this adjustment did not surprise us, as our growth estimates were closer to management’s revised outlook.
