The Kenya Power & Lighting Co. PLC is a Kenyan electricity distribution and retail utility. It purchases bulk power from generators, including KenGen and independent power producers, and transmits, distributes, and sells electricity to customers across Kenya through an extensive national grid. Its customer base spans residential, commercial, industrial, and government consumers, as well as street lighting and rural electrification connections. Operations are organized into regional business units covering Nairobi, Mount Kenya, the Coast, and West Kenya, with Nairobi typically contributing the largest share of sales. Revenue comes mainly from metered electricity sales, supplemented by connection fees and other service charges. The company is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange and is majority-owned by the Government of Kenya, which holds a controlling stake alongside institutional and retail investors. It also maintains and expands transmission and distribution infrastructure nationwide.
