East Japan Railway Co Business Description

Address 2-2-2 Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, JPN, 151-8578
East Japan Railway Company, known as JR East, is Japan's largest passenger railway operator. It operates the Shinkansen high-speed rail network in eastern and northern Japan, conventional intercity and commuter lines, and Tokyo-area urban rail services, covering roughly half of Japan's population. Beyond rail, JR East runs station retail and shopping centers, hotels, and real estate development around its stations, and provides bus and ferry services. Its passengers are primarily commuters, business travelers, and tourists, with revenue drawn from rail fares and increasingly from non-transport businesses such as retail, real estate, and lifestyle services. The company was created in 1987 when Japanese National Railways was split and privatized, and its shares trade on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It continues to invest in new rolling stock, station redevelopment, and overseas rail projects.
