Alliance Bancorp Of Pennsylvania Price-to-Owner-Earnings Calculation

In 1986 Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder Letter, Warren Buffett defined owner earnings as follows:

"These represent (a) reported earnings plus (b) depreciation, depletion, amortization, and certain other non-cash charges...less (c) the average annual amount of capitalized expenditures for plant and equipment, etc. that the business requires to fully maintain its long-term competitive position and its unit volume. (If the business requires additional working capital to maintain its competitive position and unit volume, the increment also should be included in (c))...Our owner-earnings equation does not yield the deceptively precise figures provided by GAAP, since (c) must be a guess - and one sometimes very difficult to make. Despite this problem, we consider the owner earnings figure, not the GAAP figure, to be the relevant item for valuation purposes - both for investors in buying stocks and for managers in buying entire businesses...All of this points up the absurdity of the 'cash flow' numbers that are often set forth in Wall Street reports. These numbers routinely include (a) plus (b) - but do not subtract (c)."

Alliance Bank operates a total of eight banking offices located in Delaware and Chester Counties, Pennsylvania, which are suburbs of Philadelphia. Its primary business consists of attracting deposits from the general public and using those funds, together with funds it borrows, to originate loans to its customers and invest in securities such as U.S. Government and agency securities, mortgage-backed securities and municipal obligations. Its loan originations are obtained by a variety of sources, including referrals from real estate brokers, builders, existing customers, advertising, walk-in customers and, to a significant extent, mortgage brokers who obtain credit reports, appraisals and other documentation involved with a loan. In most cases, property valuations are performed by independent outside appraisers. The Company's construction lending activities generally are limited to the Company's primary market area. The Company's residential construction loans are primarily made to local real estate builders and developers for the purpose of constructing single-family homes and single-family residential developments. The Company offers consumer loans in order to provide a full range of financial services to its customers and because such loans generally have shorter terms and higher interest rates than mortgage loans. The Company has a commercial loan department, which provides a full range of commercial loan products to small business customers in its primary marketing area.
