This is the Q3 portfolio update for legendary hedge fund manager Julian Robertson at Tiger Management. The portfolio are mainly Mr. Robertson’s personal investment.

Mr. Robertson is regarded as the founder of whole hedge fund industry. He had tremendous success from 1980 through 2000, when his flagship fund compounded 31.5%, and his asset grew from a few hundred million to $26 billion in 2008.

In addition to his own success with his fund, Mr. Robertson has taught and seeded a group of hedge fund managers who are called Tiger Cubs or Tiger Seeds. Many of the Tiger Cubs are also great investors and have been very successful on their own. GuruFocus tracks the portfolio of a few of them, including John Griffin of Blue Ridge Capital, Lee Ainslie of Maverick Capital, Andreas Halvorsen of Viking Global, and Steve Mandel of Lone Pine Capital.

According to AR magazine, all but Ainslie proved themselves in 2008, when Halvorsen was flat for the year, while Griffin and Shumway were each down only about 8% or so-relative victories in a year when a number of managers lost more than 20%, and the Standard & Poor’s 500 dropped 37%.

How does Mr. Robertson invest? According to the same article on AR Magazine, Mr. Robertson buys the best stocks and short the worst. “But it’s not easy; Robertson constantly pressed his analysts to replace good ideas with even better ideas. Shorting also was critical to returns, not just as a means to hedge the portfolio but as a key profit center. It is the quintessential bottom-up investing approach-and one that has been adopted by so many that it doesn’t seem so unusual anymore.”

As of 09/30/2010, Tiger Management owns 23 stocks with a total value of $299 million. These are the details of the buys and sells.
