(GuruFocus, December 18, 2008) James Altucher, managing partner of Formula Capital went to Yahoo! Finance Tech Ticker recommending people buy Markel (MKL, Financial) as an alternative to Berkshire Hathaway. Investment Guru Tom Gayner is the Chief Investment Officer of the company.

We concur with Mr. Altucher and consider Markel is a mini-Berkshire Hathaway, like Prem Watsa’s Fairfax financials and Ian Cumming’s Leucadia. They own insurance companies and use the float to invest and grow the company’s book value by value investing. And they buy entire businesses to diversify their operations.

Each Investment Gurus faces unique challenges and has different approaches when it comes to investing, but what surprises me is the number of stocks that Buffett and Gayner share.
