US Market Indexes Gain Ahead of State of the Union Address

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,411.52 on Tuesday with a gain of 172.15 points or 0.68%. The S&P 500 closed at 2,737.70 for a gain of 12.83 points or 0.47%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 7,402.08 for a gain of 54.55 points or 0.74%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 15.51 for a loss of 0.22 points or -1.40%.

Tuesday’s market movers

U.S. market indexes gained for a fifth day ahead of President Trump’s State of the Union address, which is scheduled for Tuesday night at 9 p.m. Eastern. Earnings also helped to support gains, with Alphabet (GOOG, Financial) (GOOGL, Financial), Apple (AAPL, Financial), Disney (DIS, Financial), Estée Lauder (EL, Financial), M/I Homes (MHO, Financial) and BP (BP, Financial) leading headlines.

After controversial scheduling due to the government shutdown, the president will address the nation Tuesday night. Investors will be watching for a potential border emergency announcement, plans for discussions with North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un and insights on tariff negotiations with China ahead of a March 1 deadline.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The Markit Services PMI decreased to 54.2 in January from 54.4.
  • The ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI decreased to 56.7 in January from 58.0.
  • The Treasury held an auction for three-year notes at a rate of 2.502%.

The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,580.58 for a gain of 24.23 points or 0.25%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,597.27 for a gain of 21.29 points or 0.22%.
