According to current portfolio statistics and the Top 10 Holdings of Gurus page, two of our major Premium features, the top six holdings of Jeremy Grantham (Trades, Portfolio)’s Grantham, Mayo and Van Otterloo as of the June quarter were Microsoft Corp. (MSFT, Financial), Apple Inc. (AAPL, Financial), Oracle Corp. (ORCL, Financial), UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH, Financial), Medtronic PLC (MDT, Financial) and Merck & Co. (MRK, Financial).

Grantham, board chairman of GMO, co-founded the Boston-based firm in 1977. According to the firm’s website, GMO seeks capital appreciation through a long-term, valuation-based investment approach.

GMO board member Ben Inker said in the firm’s second-quarter letter that larger companies have seen “marked improvement” in profitability over the past 30 years, while smaller companies “have seen very little change.” Inker commented that higher market power and a “playing field” tilted in favor of the larger companies contributed to the higher profitability for large companies.

As of quarter-end, GMO’s $14.21 billion equity portfolio contained 699 stocks, of which 124 represent new holdings. The top three sectors in terms of portfolio weight are technology, health care and financial services, with weights of 30.97%, 17.74% and 15.34%.

Microsoft

GMO owns 4,465,537 shares of Microsoft, dedicating 4.21% of the equity portfolio to the stake. Shares averaged $126.89 during the quarter.

Founded by Bill Gates (Trades, Portfolio), Microsoft has a market cap of approximately $1.065 trillion, the largest U.S. public company according to an All-in-One Screener search of all U.S. companies with a market cap of at least $200 billion.
