GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Dollar Tree Inc operates discount retail stores in the United States and Canada. It operates the stores under the names of Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree Canada.

Dollar Tree is a discount retailer in the United States, with around 14,800 stores in 48 states and five Canadian providences as of the end of fiscal 2017. In July 2015, the company completed its acquisition of Family Dollar, roughly doubling its store base. The combined company sells goods at prices of $1 (CAD 1.25) to $10, through convenient and small stores (average 8,000 square feet), primarily in suburban areas.

Guru Investment Theses on Dollar Tree Inc

Chuck Akre Comments on Dollar Tree - Oct 16, 2018

The five largest detractors from performance this quarter were Constellation Software, Dollar Tree, Moody’s, SBA Communications, and TD Ameritrade. Across the board, our long-term investment theses are largely unchanged. Mainly, the stock price movements were around quarterly noise. At Dollar Tree (NASDAQ:DLTR), all eyes are on the lackluster Q2 performance of the Family Dollar business, acquired three years ago. Dollar Tree has made good progress on cost structure and consumables merchandising despite a difficult competitive environment. However, successful merchandising of non-consumable items remains elusive. Long-time company insider Gary Philbin just entered his second year as CEO and captain of this ship. We take a long view and see durable advantages of the business extending many, many years. But Gary’s leadership is central to the opportunity.

Chuck Akre Comments on Dollar Tree - Jul 17, 2018

Dollar Tree (NASDAQ:DLTR)’s share price took its second consecutive hit on a quarterly earnings release, primarily due to disappointment over Family Dollar’s sales performance. We remain confident in Dollar Tree to continue its improvement in Family Dollar and note that this is the largest integration in retail history based on the number of stores. Improvement at Family Dollar will not be linear.

Weitz Value Fund Comments on Dollar Tree - Apr 27, 2017

Dollar Tree (NASDAQ:DLTR) operates a network of approximately 14,400 discount variety stores under the Dollar Tree, Dollar Tree Canada and Family Dollar brands. The legacy Dollar Tree concept is the last remaining true dollar store, where every item is a dollar. Its balanced offering of consumables (food and toilet paper) and more discretionary items (toys, stationery and party supplies) has generated consistently attractive financial results, with same store sales rising 22 of the past 23 years. Family Dollar, acquired for $8.8 billion in 2015, focuses more heavily on basic necessities such as diapers, food and paper products at prices between $1 and $10. Dollar Tree is early in the process of improving Family Dollar’s operating results, executing what we believe is a credible plan toward closing the gap in financial performance that exists with its nearest competitor Dollar General. Dollar stores’ unique combination of low prices and convenience continues to resonate with low- and middle-class consumers, providing attractive future store growth opportunities and durable excess cash flow. Portfolio Manager Dave Perkins profiles Dollar Tree in more detail in this quarter’s Analyst Corner.
